Quick History of the RAM 1500

The RAM 1500 has been a trustworthy pickup truck for decades, going through many different variations before becoming the RAM 1500 truck we know and love today. The truck made its debut in 1981 as the “Dodge Ram 150” series, and this first generation of RAM trucks were offered in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive with 6.5-foot or 8-foot beds, plus the option of extended cab or crew cab.

The Dodge Ram 150 came equipped with the highly regarded Mopar 3.7-liter slant six engine and included a 5.2-liter V8 and 5.9-liter V8 as other engine options. For the transmission, drivers got to choose from a three-speed automatic, four-speed automatic, four-speed manual, or a five-speed manual.

In 1988, electronic fuel injection was included in the 5.2-liter V8, and the electronic fuel injected 3.9-liter V6 took the spot of the 3.7-liter slant-six engine. The biggest addition in 1988 was the introduction of the 5.9-liter Cummins inline-six turbodiesel into the lineup.

The second generation of Ram trucks came in 1994 with the introduction of the Dodge RAM 1500. This generation of Dodge Rams brought about the “big rig” styling, earning it the 1994 Motor Trend Truck of the Year Award. The 1994 release included an upgrading of the engine options that came about in 1993, with the 3.9-liter V6, 5.2-liter V8, and 5.9-liter V8 all having multi-port fuel injection and high-flow manifolds.

RAM 1500 drives also had the option of multiple trim levels: Work Special, LT, ST, and SLT. The SLT provided truck enthusiasts with a car-like interior atmosphere with powered windows, power locks, A/C, and an AM/FM radio with a cassette player.

In 2002, Dodge introduced the third generation of Dodge Ram trucks, now officially named the RAM 1500. This new generation included a few style tweaks, a new frame, suspension, and engine options. The RAM 1500 carried over the 3.7-liter V6 engine options but replaced the 5.2-liter V8 with a 4.7-liter V8. The third generation Hemi V8 option was now a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 instead of the original 5.9-liter Hemi V8 engine offered previously.

Now well established as the RAM 1500, the fourth-generation truck continued its iconic two-wheel- and all-wheel-drive options, offering a single or quad-cab layout. Depending on your cab choice, drivers have the option of a short 5.7-foot bed, 6.25-foot bed, or a long 8-foot bed. Comfort was a top priority for the fourth generation of RAM trucks, as they added features such as heated seats and power-adjustable floor pedals with stylish, comfortable interior.
