You don’t need to be an automotive expert to understand the importance of properly functioning brakes. But most drivers don’t give them a second thought until they start experiencing problems with their brakes – like a persistent noise every time they press the pedal.

The sound, while unpleasant, is a warning sign that something is wrong and therefore, should NOT be ignored. If your brakes are making noise, our experienced service technicians here at Hoover Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM can help!

Common Brake Issues

Brake systems typically make one of these sounds, hinting at the problem:

  • Squeaking/squealing: This is likely an indication that your brake pads need replacing. They’re designed with wear indicators that rub against the rotors, creating that metal-on-metal noise. Other possible culprits include debris caught between the brake pad and rotor, glazing due to sticking brake calipers or worn brake shoes.
  • Grinding: If your brake pads have completely worn down, you’ll hear a grinding noise. Pull over immediately and call a tow truck. Continuing to drive is not only incredibly dangerous, but can do costly damage to your brake system.
  • Thumping/clicking: You may notice this if the parts that hold the brake pads, rotors or calipers in place are broken or loose – and in need of repair or replacement.

Ways to Extend the Life of Your Brakes

The system responsible for stopping your car includes various brake parts, and like anything else, brakes wear out. But these tips, along with regular vehicle maintenance, can help lengthen the life of your brakes:

  • Avoid sudden stops.
Slamming your brakes on, especially at high speeds, is a surefire way to prematurely wear down your brake pads.
  • Never drive with two feet.
Keeping one foot on the gas pedal and one on the brake can lead to “brake taps” during acceleration that put unnecessary strain on your brakes.
  • Lighten the load.
Unless necessary, don’t weigh your car down with heavy objects.
  • Coast when you can.
If possible, coast to slow down instead of braking.
  • Bleed and flush your brakes every 2 years.
This prevents air in your brake lines as well as internal corrosion, both of which make brakes less effective. Consult your owner’s manual to find out exactly how often to do this.
  • Maintain a balanced suspension system.
This will prevent your front brakes from wearing out faster.

How to Tell When It’s Time For a Brake Replacement

If you notice any of these warning signs, schedule a service appointment immediately to fix your brake issues.

  • Brakes making noise (squeaking, grinding, etc)
  • Decreased responsiveness (Note: May indicate a bad brake booster)
  • Vehicle pulling to one side when braking
  • Vibrating brake pedal
