Dangers of Worn Tires

Driving on worn tires can be very dangerous, with reduced traction and poor handling putting you at risk. In fact, nearly one in ten vehicle accidents is tire-related, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That’s why it’s important to inspect your tires once a month – and to keep an eye out for these tell-tale signs.

Tire Warning Signs

If you notice these warning signs, your tires may be trying to tell you something! Here are some problems with worn tires:
  • Sliding/hydroplaning
  • Reduced traction in turns or on wet road surfaces
  • Increased braking distance
  • Vibration or other driving disturbances
Good news: You can check your tires’ tread depth using nothing more than a penny! Insert a penny, head first, into the tread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, you likely have bald tires! If the top of his head is covered, your tires still have a safe amount of tread. As a rule of thumb, tires are considered unsafe when they wear down to 2/34”, but you may notice decreased performance at about 4/34”.

Choosing New Tires For Your Vehicle

When tire shopping, it’s typically best to stick with the type of tire that was on your vehicle when you bought it. You can also check the manufacturing manual for recommendations. Also, keep the tire’s age in mind. Most tires should be inspected after about 5 or 6 years. In addition to price, tires differ in:
  • Size (Hint: It’s important to choose the right one for your specific vehicle)
  • Type (all-season, performance, etc)
  • Speed rating
  • Tire brand
We can help you select the right tires for your vehicle – and your budget!
